About the Racial Justice Board
The Racial Justice Board (RJB) was established by the Archbishops’ Council in December 2024 following the successful conclusion of the work on the Committee for Minority Ethnic Anglican Concerns (CMEAC). The Racial Justice Board (RJB) would be a sub-committee of the Archbishops’
Council and would oversee its work in relation to racial justice.
Duties of the Racial Justice Board
The RJB would:
- recommend Racial Justice Strategy to the Council and report on progress to deliver it.
- oversee the Racial Justice Delivery Plan, ensuring it is delivered to time and budget
- keep under review the impact of the Racial Justice Grant Programme
- oversee the work of the Racial Justice Unit in encouraging and fostering Diocesan racial justice initiatives and programmes and sharing best practice across the Church.
- oversee the work of the Racial Justice Unit in:
- providing support and resources to minoritised ethnic members of the General Synod and of the Archbishops' Council and its Boards, Councils and Committees.
- providing support and resources or similar work in diocesan synods and in their Boards, Councils and Committees and to monitor such work.
- providing support to the bishops and their dioceses in developing diocesan-wide strategies for combating racial bias within the Church
- the development and empowerment of minoritised ethnic Anglicans, and in particular – in collaboration with the Ministry Division – to foster and encourage vocations to ministry within the Church
Composition of the Racial Justice Board
The membership of the Board shall be as follows:
a) The Chair shall be a member of the Archbishops’ Council.
b) The Deputy Chair shall be the Lead Bishop for Racial Justice.
c) Three General Synod members elected by the General Synod to include
one member from each House.
d) Three members appointed by the Appointments Committee after
consultation with the Chair of the Racial Justice Board.
e) Four independent members with expertise in racial justice, diversity and inclusion, appointed after a fair and transparent public
